Privacy Policy
Introduction
Chill Creatures LLC ("we", "us", or "our") makes Calorie Tape ("the App"). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use it. The short version: we can't access your food log, and you don't need a Calorie Tape account. Two optional community features can send barcodes or package photos to our servers, but only if you agree.
Information we collect
We never receive your food log, your targets, your settings or anything from Apple Health. There's no Calorie Tape account or sign-in.
We get data only from the optional community features, and only after you agree. That data is the barcodes you look up, the package photos you send us to read, the food details and nutrition values you submit, and the request metadata described below.
Optional community features
Two features use our servers. Each one stays off until you agree, and the App asks you the first time you use it. You can turn either one off at any time in the App's Settings, under Data.
Shared Foods. When you scan a barcode that isn't in the App, the App can look it up among foods other people have shared. To do that, it sends the barcode to our servers. The operational records described below keep the barcode together with your installation's ID (see App Attest below) for 7 days.
Label Reading. When you take photos of a food package, the App can send them to our servers so our label-reading providers can read the label. Those providers don't keep the photos. If you don't submit the food, we delete its photos, and what we read from them, after 7 days. If you save a food we read this way and it has a barcode, the App submits its photos and the values you saved to the shared catalog. Our reviewers look at the photos. We keep the photos and the values, and we may publish the values so other people can use them. For manual review, we may send submitted package photos and food details to private review tools. The providers of those tools may retain copies. Because there's no account, nothing links a submission to your name.
Service logs are kept for up to 7 days to run the online features and prevent abuse. New logs exclude IP addresses and location; older logs expire within 7 days.
App Attest. To protect the shared catalog, both features use Apple's App Attest to check that requests come from a real copy of the App. App Attest gives your installation of the App an ID. That ID isn't linked to your name, your Apple Account or your food log.
Your devices and iCloud
The App keeps your food log, custom foods, targets and settings on your devices. In the launch version, they also sync through your private iCloud account when you're signed in. We can't access them. Device backups follow Apple's terms and your settings. If you submit a custom food through Label Reading, we also get a copy of it, as described above.
Camera and photos
The App uses the camera only when you scan a barcode or take a photo of a food package. If Label Reading is off, the App reads your photos on your iPhone to fill in the food's details, then throws them away. If Label Reading is on, the App sends them to us as described above. When you choose photos from your library, the App sees only the ones you pick.
Apple Intelligence
If your iPhone has Apple Intelligence and Label Reading is off, the App uses Apple's on-device model to read a package's name and brand from your photos. The model runs on your iPhone and sends nothing to us.
Apple Health
Apple Health is off unless you turn it on in the App's settings. These permissions stay on each device. If you turn on saving food, each food you log, with its nutrients, is also saved in Health, where you choose which apps can read it. If you turn on reading active energy, the App reads each day's active energy from Health to show beside what you ate; it isn't stored in your food log. Health data never leaves your iPhone through the App, is never sent to us, and is never used for advertising. You can turn either off at any time, and remove the App's food from Health when you do.
Purchases
If you make an in-app purchase, Apple processes the payment. We don't receive your payment details or any information that identifies you. Apple shares only aggregated sales reports with us.
Analytics, advertising and tracking
The App contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and no third-party SDKs that collect data. If you've chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports, which help us fix bugs.
This website
calorietape.com uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and see how quickly pages load. For each page you view, it records the page, the site that linked you to it, how long the page took to load, and your country, browser, operating system and type of device. It uses no cookies and doesn't identify you. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, also processes basic request data, such as IP addresses, to deliver and protect it.
Children's privacy
The App doesn't ask anyone, including children, for their name or contact details. The optional community features send the barcodes, package photos, food details and service metadata described above.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data. We can't access your food log. Delete foods or entries in the App to remove them from your log. Deleting the App removes its local copy, not synced iCloud data. Nothing the community features send is linked to your name or an account, so we can't look up what one person sent. Food the App saved in Apple Health stays there until you remove it in the App's settings or in the Health app.
California residents
We don't sell or share personal information as defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its "Last updated" date. A change that affects your data will also be noted in the App's release notes.
